Reading the Word

1. Reading the Word

God has given us two great spiritual inheritances: the invisible Holy Spirit within us and the visible Bible in our hands. Everything God speaks to man today is based on what He has already spoken in His Word. Hence, if a believer desires to know God well, he must read the Bible. The whole Bible is the complete revelation of God; every word and every sentence is inspired by God. God has spoken and has thus revealed Himself. Through the word we contact God Himself, receive the life-supply, and receive enlightenment. Watchman Nee and Witness Lee loved, treasured, and faithfully spoke the Word of God. Through their ministry, many believers have also become lovers of the Holy Word.

In this excerpt, Witness Lee encourages the believers to build up a habit of spending time reading the Word:

We should help the saints to build up a practice or a habit that every day they would spend at least thirty minutes in the Word. This can be done by taking ten minutes in the morning, ten minutes in the evening, and another ten minutes before going to bed. We all need to build up such a practice to spend at least thirty minutes a day to get into God’s Word….After one year of studying the Bible in this way, there will be a solid change in the saints’ home life, private life, and church life.

(Witness Lee, Way to Carry Out the Vision, 108-109)

In the following passage, Witness Lee shares on contacting the Lord through His Word:

Do you want to live with the Lord and enjoy the Lord’s life? Then you need to contact the Lord through His Word. If you would read the Bible in this way every morning, always contacting the Lord through His Word, what you will gain in the end is not just the word of life but even more the Lord Himself. The Lord is the Spirit, and this Spirit is hidden in the words of the Bible. The words of the Bible are a container, and the content within is the Lord Himself.
